5 Easy Cold Weather Recipes for Busy Families (Using Fresh Local Ingredients)

Winter has arrived in earnest in Orange, and the best thing you can do for your family right now is lean into it. Not fight the season with smoothie bowls and salads, but actually cook for it — warm, nourishing food that uses what's genuinely in season and genuinely at its best.

Here are five recipes built for busy weeknights, all of them better when you start with fresh, local produce.

1. Pea and Bacon Soup The simplest winter soup there is, and one of the most satisfying. Render down a generous handful of bacon bits in a heavy pot, add a diced onion, cover with stock, tip in a bag of frozen peas, and blend. Done in 25 minutes. The difference between good pea soup and great pea soup is almost entirely the bacon — and when that bacon was cubed fresh this week, you'll taste it.

2. Citrus and Fennel Winter Salad Yes, a salad — but a warm-weather salad this is not. Thinly slice fennel, segment two or three oranges, scatter over some good fetta, dress with olive oil and a little orange zest, and finish with toasted walnuts. It's bright without being cold, and it works as a side to roast chicken or pork beautifully. Peak-season citrus makes this — flat, out-of-season oranges just don't cut it.

3. Slow-Cooked Pork and Bean Cassoulet Brown off some pork (shoulder or ribs work well), add white beans, tinned tomatoes, a cup of stock, garlic, thyme, and whatever root vegetables you have. Into a low oven for 2–3 hours. This is the kind of meal that rewards patience — and it feeds a family of four easily with leftovers for lunch. Bacon bits added in the last 30 minutes add a smoky finish that pulls everything together.

4. Ham Hock and Vegetable Soup Now that the season is shifting, ham hocks are back — and for good reason. Cover a hock in cold water with carrot, celery, onion, and bay leaves. Simmer for 2 hours. Pull the meat, discard the bone, return the shredded pork to the stock with whatever vegetables you have on hand. It's essentially free dinner from one cheap, underused cut.

5. Warm Orange and Coffee Cake A weekend project worth doing. A simple butter cake batter with fresh orange zest folded in, finished with a coffee syrup made from a double-shot of the Pinnacle Blend. Serve warm with cream. It's genuinely the kind of thing that makes a cold Saturday feel intentional rather than something to survive.

The common thread across all of these? They're better with produce that was still on a farm or in a roaster earlier this week. That's what we do — click across to the shop page to find amazing fresh local Orange ingredients now!
